ALCESTER NATURE

INFORMATION ABOUT PLACES OF INTEREST IN THE ALCESTER AREA

WHERE IS ALCESTER?

Alcester is a small country town in South Warwickshire, situated at the junction of the Rivers Arrow and Alne.  The River Arrow flows into the River Avon five miles south of the town.  The town is set in beautiful countryside consisting of  hills, woods, fields and heath land.

The town dates back to Roman times and was the site of a substantial Roman camp and fort on the Icknield street, which ran from Wall near Lichfield to Cirencester.

WHERE CAN I ENJOY NATURE?

RIVER ARROW LOCAL NATURE RESERVE

This small but varied nature reserve is the jewel in Alcester's crown.  Despite being located within the town and surrounded by habitation it is a surprisingly peaceful place. Enjoy the trees, flowers and riverbank. Who knows, you may even catch a glimpse of a kingfisher!

OVERSLEY WOOD

Oversley Wood is an area of ancient woodland under the ownership of the Forestry Commission.  There is open access to the wood.  The wood is situated about one mile south of the town.

FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS

Pedestrians can enjoy many public footpaths in the Alcester area.  There are also bridleways which can be used by horse riders and cyclists.  These paths give access to the varied countryside around the town, and many are like linear nature reserves in their own right.
